    "Les collines heureuses" is the affectionate name given by Jean Giono to these lands of Haute Provence.

  • But before they were "happy", the hills of Puyméras, Faucon and Saint-Romain-en-Viennois went through hard times during the Wars of Religion. It's their road to peace that welcomes you on this tour.

    Stroll along these "happy hills", as Giono liked to call them in Provence: that of Faucon, with the path winding around this perched village, that of the beautiful Jau forest with its orchard openings, and those that undulate between Saint-Romain-en-Viennois and Puyméras along the Lauzon...

    These are happy hills, because they bear witness to a return to peace after the terrible destruction wrought by the wars of religion in the 16th century, fanned by the fanaticism of both sides; a return to peace under the aegis of enlightened politicians and edicts of tolerance, accompanied by the great surge of spirituality in the 17th century that prompted the rebuilding of chapels.
