The Gorges du Toulourenc, a natural gem between the Baronnies Provençales and Mont Ventoux, is much more than just a tourist attraction. Classified Natura 2000 along with the Ouvèze since 2010, these gorges are part of a European network dedicated to preserving biodiversity while enabling the sustainable development of activities.

A commitment charter To preserve the Gorges

A charter of commitment to the preservation of the Gorges du Toulourenc has been signed by the communes, the State and the Baronnies and Mont Ventoux Parks, of which Vaison Ventoux Provence is a part.

However, despite their protected status, the Gorges du Toulourenc are threatened by over-visiting. The consequences of this influx of visitors are manifold and threaten biodiversity. Excessive trampling alters the habitats of aquatic species, while the construction of pebble dams disrupts the natural course of the water and traps aquatic fauna. Water quality is also compromised by the presence of waste and residues of cosmetic products such as sunscreen.

It’s also important to consider the potential risks associated with this natural setting. The risk of drowning in the event of a sudden rise in water levels, even in fine weather, is very real. For this reason, access to the Gorges is forbidden by inter-prefectoral decree in the event of a Météo France orange or red alert for the Vaucluse and/or Drôme regions. In addition, the risk of slipping and catching fire, even at the river’s edge, is a factor to be taken into consideration during your visit.
