Avignon

Approximately 50km from Vaison-la-Romaine, lies the city of Avignon, offering an enchanting blend of historical heritage, culture and charm. Nestling on the banks of the Rhône, this thousand-year-old city has captivated visitors for centuries, and with good reason!

Avignon City of the Popes

Avignon is known for its rich history and heritage. Its past is reflected in its imposing ramparts, witnesses to the rich hours of the Middle Ages. The centerpiece of this history is, of course, the Palais des Papes, a Gothic palace that was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century. Just a stone’s throw from the Palais des Papes is the Rocher des Doms, a hanging garden offering views over the city, the Pont-Saint-Bénézet and the Rhône valley. The perfect opportunity to relax in the shade of the trees.

Pont-Saint-Bénézet, also known as Pont d’Avignon, is one of the city’s most emblematic symbols. Built in the 12th century, this bridge, partially destroyed by the tumultuous Rhone River, embodies the grandeur of human history. To walk along its remains is to follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims and merchants who once crossed its arches, as recounted in the famous song about this historic monument.

In the heart of the Rhône, the Ile de la Barthelasse offers a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s the ideal spot for a picnic in the shade of the trees. For the more sporty, you can cycle around the island, which is equipped with numerous cycle paths.

Avignon is also a hotbed of culture. Every summer in July, the city is transformed into an open-air theater during the famous Festival d’Avignon. Bringing together artists, creators and theater enthusiasts from all over the world, this prestigious event offers an eclectic program of live shows, daring performances and unique artistic experiences.
