Our Templar villages

The imprint of the Catholic Knights Templar is still evident in Vaison Ventoux Provence. Discover the stigmata of the past in the villages of Roaix, Buisson and Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde, not forgetting the typically Provencal break at Villedieu.

1. Buisson

This Provencal village offers a breathtaking view of the Aygues valley from its hilltop. This Templar stronghold invites you to explore its narrow streets steeped in history, where the scents of yesteryear mingle with the fresh air.

The parish church, Notre-Dame-del-Bois, boasts an original bell-tower. The Saint-Pierre and Notre-Dame-d’Argelier chapels on the outskirts of the village are well worth a visit.

On Place Verdun, the fountain and washhouse add charm to the village. The restored ramparts and the belfry, with its clock and wrought-iron campanile, bear witness to the village’s past.

Numerous hiking trails can be explored from the village to discover the surrounding countryside.

2. Roaix

Clinging to the side of a hill, the village of Roaix reveals its charms amidst the surrounding vineyards. Its history is closely linked to the Knights Templar, with a Commanderie erected in their honor.

On the higher ground, the historic town center invites you to stroll through its narrow streets. Here, you’ll find a number of fine residences, as well as remnants of the original village walls and a fountain steeped in history.

The church of Saint-Roch has a singular architecture, with its apse facing west. Next door, a cul-de-sac leads to a viewpoint overlooking Mont Ventoux.

3. Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde

Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde is a small, intimate village with steep alleyways and traces of the Templars and Hospitallers. Situated on the left bank of the Aygues river, this historic village can be explored step by step, with fascinating discoveries dotting the landscape.

Its shady square, with its four plane trees and fountain, is a haven of Provencal tranquillity! An ideal place to relax while listening to the murmur of flowing water.

The village has a rich heritage, with its four-masked fountain, washhouse and parish church. At the highest point of the village, you can see the ancient castle, of which only three towers remain.

4. Villedieu

A former Commanderie des Hospitaliers and Templar stronghold attached to the Commanderie de Roaix, Villedieu borders the Drôme department.

Its hilly landscape is dotted with vineyards, olive groves and pine forests. Imposing ramparts surround the ancient heart of the village. The Place de la Libération, with its fountain, is an emblematic gathering place.

One of the three gates in the ramparts proudly displays one of the last remaining authentic papal crests in the Vaucluse.

In the old village, the narrow streets invite you to stroll, where you’ll find the Romanesque church of Saint-Michel and its bell tower.
