OTI Vaison Ventoux Provence teamAs a citizen of the world, I’ve lived on two continents, and I’m lucky enough to experience Christmas through many different cultures. As December approaches, I think back to my childhood Christmases in Africa’s Congo-Brazzaville and those I later experienced in Germany’s Lübeck, and now to the way we celebrate it here in Vaison Ventoux Provence.
In Africa, Christmas was celebrated in bright sunshine, with handcrafted decorations, music, laughter and traditional dishes shared with family and neighbors. In Germany, the Advent season was marked by illuminated Christmas markets, Advent calendars and traditions like Saint Nicholas. We spent warm moments preparing gifts and making gingerbread houses (Lebkuchenhaus). Here in France, I’ve discovered local and Provençal traditions such as Saint Barbara’s wheat, midnight mass and the thirteen desserts, which add a unique touch. Christmas markets, cribs and carols make the season even more special. I love passing on this cultural mix of sunny, snowy and Provençal Christmases to my children. For us, Christmas remains a celebration that unites, reinvents and preserves warmth, joy and family sharing.

As night falls, Vaison Ventoux Provence is transformed into a veritable tableau of light, creating a magical atmosphere. Decorations, giant fir trees, garlands and decorations illuminate squares and alleyways, enchanting young and old alike. As good news never comes alone, every two years the village of Brantes welcomes you to its famous ‘Brantes dans les étoiles’ evenings. For three days, the village streets are lit up to prolong the magic of the festive season. Local residents open their doors for artists and craftspeople to display their creations. A warm welcome and a chance to discover their traditional skills. (The next Brantes dans les étoiles event will take place in December 2026.)
2023 01 03 Dv NienkeWhen I was a child in the Netherlands, I always looked forward to Christmas… The morning began with a hearty breakfast of ‘Christmas stollen’, shared with my parents and brothers. The candles were lit, the tree shone, and we listened to Christmas carols. In the evenings, we’d enjoy a delicious meal, often with my grandparents. There was something magical about these moments.
Today, I create my own memories with my family, in another country. Here, I like to mix the traditions of my childhood with new local discoveries. Every two years, we go to the charming village of Brantes, where the Christmas atmosphere is simply magical. It’s a place where Christmas becomes magical all over again!
