When night falls, Vaison Ventoux Provence is transformed into a veritable light show, creating a magical atmosphere. Decorations, giant fir trees, garlands and ornaments light up the squares and avenues, enchanting young and old alike. As good news never comes alone, every two years the village of Brantes welcomes you to its famous “Brantes in the Stars” evenings. For three days, the streets of the village are lit up to prolong the magic of the festive season. Local residents open their doors to artists and craftspeople to display their creations. A warm welcome and a chance to discover traditional crafts. (The next Brantes dans les étoiles event will take place in December 2026).

OTI Vaison Ventoux Provence teamAs a citizen of the world, I’ve lived on two continents and have been lucky enough to celebrate Christmas in many different cultures. As December approaches, I think back to the Christmases of my childhood in Africa, in Congo-Brazzaville, then to those I later experienced in Germany, in Lübeck, and finally to the way we celebrate it here, in Vaison Ventoux in Provence.
In Africa, Christmas was celebrated in bright sunshine, with handmade decorations, music, laughter and traditional food shared with family and neighbours. In Germany, the Advent period was marked by illuminated Christmas markets, Advent calendars and traditions such as St Nicholas. We spent warm moments preparing presents and making gingerbread houses (Lebkuchenhaus). Here in France, I’ve discovered local and Provençal traditions such as Saint Barbara’s wheat, midnight mass and the thirteen desserts, which add a unique touch. The markets, cots and carols make this time of year even more special. I love passing on this cultural mix of sunny, snowy and Provençal Christmases to my children. For us, Christmas remains a celebration that unites, reinvents and preserves the warmth, joy and sharing of family life.

2023 01 03 Dv NienkeAs a child in the Netherlands, I always looked forward to Christmas… The morning began with a hearty breakfast of “kerststollen”, which I shared with my parents and brothers. The candles were lit, the tree sparkled and we listened to Christmas carols. In the evening, we’d enjoy a good meal, often at my grandparents’ house. There was something magical about those moments.
Today, I create my own memories with my family in another country. I like to mix the traditions of my childhood with new local discoveries. Every two years, we go to the charming village of Brantes, where the Christmas atmosphere is simply magical. It’s a place where Christmas becomes magical all over again!
