The Roman Bridge

Built in the 1st century A.D., it is anchored in the rock at a narrowing of the Ouvèze river. Its single arch, 17 m wide and 9 m high, is made up of five semicircular arches and rests on the rock. In ancient times, the bridge dominated the dyke installations on piles. The river encouraged intense commercial traffic, carried out by corporations of navigators. The Pont Romain has always provided a link between the town center and the medieval city on the heights, despite the Ouvèze's flooding. During the reign of the Comte de Toulouse, it played a strategic role as an obligatory passageway and toll booth. In the 15th century, it was used as a lookout post.
