Chapels in hilltop villages
The Chemin des Chapelles in Pays Ventoux

Chemin des chapelles – route 4

Between vineyards and olive groves, discover the hidden and preserved chapels of our Vaison Ventoux Provence territory.

This itinerary linking Sablet, Séguret and Crestet is particularly representative of medieval times, when fortifications were extensively built to protect against the multitude of conflicts and violence. The walls also helped filter through traffic during the plague epidemic.

Come and meet Perched villages

Chapels were built between the 15th and 17th centuries to perpetuate the cult of divinity and purify villages from the calamities of the time.

So, in the villages you pass through, you’ll find several chapels dedicated to saints renowned for their blessings.
In Sablet, for example, prayers were said at the Saint Roch chapel to combat epidemics, and others were recited at the Saint Nazaire chapel for temporal problems.
During these uncertain times, the inhabitants also venerated the Virgin Mary, as at the Notre Dame de l’Annonciade chapel in Crestet.

Along the way, discover the ruins of thefemale Abbey of Prébayon, built in 611 on the initiative of Rusticule, a woman whose family owned the abbey lands.
