Safety rules to know to go hiking

Hiking in the heart of nature is an activity rich in discoveries in Vaison Ventoux Provence. It’s an exciting activity that’s accessible to everyone! In Vaison Ventoux Provence, where the trails wind between mountains, valleys and vineyards, good preparation is essential if you are to get the most out of this wilderness experience. Here’s our advice on how to get the most out of your trip!

Access to forest areas Vigilance is essential during the summer season

Every year, during the summer period from June 15 to September 15, access to forest areas in the Vaucluse département may be regulated, limited or even prohibited, depending on weather conditions. This measure is essential to prevent the risk of fire, which is particularly high in Provence due to the heat and mistral winds.

So before planning a hike or walk, it’s essential to check whether the massifs you want to explore are accessible. The map of forest access risks, updated daily by the Prefecture, indicates areas exposed to danger and any restrictions. It is published every day before 7pm, to provide information on conditions for the following day.

How can I check access to forest areas?
There are two easy ways to obtain this information:

  • Online: Visit the Vaucluse Prefecture website, where the map of restrictions is updated daily.
  • By voice mail:

A telephone service is available to inform you of access conditions.

Respecting these restrictions is not only a legal obligation, but also a way of preserving the natural wealth of our region. By respecting these instructions, you are helping to reduce the risk of fire ravaging the emblematic landscapes of Vaison Ventoux Provence.

For more information, don’t hesitate to contact our team at the Tourist Office. They can point you in the direction of alternative itineraries or advise you on the best periods for your outdoor activities.

Stay on the marked trails A guarantee of safety

Follow the signs: When you follow a signposted trail, you’re following a safe, well-designed route. Follow the signs and stay on the path. Marked trails are designed to ensure your safety and preserve the environment. Going off-trail can not only damage ecosystems, but also increase the risk of getting lost or falling.

GR® and PR® trails are marked with paint. Learn to spot them to avoid getting lost. Maps and topos are available for sale in the Vaison Ventoux Provence tourist office store.

Protection dogs The right reflexes

On your walks, you may come across herding dogs. The latter are often accompanied by guard dogs: patous! These herding dogs can be quite impressive. If you come across one, stay calm, slow down and control your movements.

Here are a few tips:

  • Go around the herd without trying to cross it, and avoid petting the dogs.
  • If your dog is with you, keep him on a leash and don’t hug him.
  • If you have hiking poles, don’t threaten the dogs, and keep them pointed downwards.

Beware of behaviour that seems harmless (trying to feed, stroke, take a photo….): guard dogs can interpret this as aggression!

In the event of a problem know what to do!

If you find yourself in difficulty or in an emergency situation:

– Alert the emergency services: If you are lost or have had an accident, dial the emergency number(112 in Europe or the mountain rescue number 114 by SMS for the hearing-impaired) and indicate your position, using landmarks such as viewpoints, beacons, or place names.

. Stay calm: In case of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, stay calm, seek shelter and wait for help, making sure you remain visible.

Tip :

Take along an electric lamp or the light from your telephone (if you have sufficient battery power or an external battery) to make signals.

Environment The right gestures

Safe hiking also means protecting the places you pass through… Here are a few reminders to help preserve Mother Nature and all her delights:

  • Respect protected areas: Don’t enter prohibited or protected areas to preserve flora and fauna.
  • Be vigilant with wildlife: Don’t try to approach, feed or interact with wild animals.
  • Take your garbage with you: Even biodegradable waste such as peelings should be taken with you. They can disrupt local ecosystems.
  • Avoid fires: Smoking or lighting fires in the wild is forbidden and dangerous.
  • Don’t pick plants: Some local species are protected and contribute to the beauty and balance of the region.
