On Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, Valréas will participate in the 2026 European Heritage Days with a program dedicated to heritage that has been lost, is at risk, has been restored, and has been passed down.

Exhibitions, archives, talks, workshops, and tours will give everyone a fresh perspective on the city’s rich heritage. Under the theme “Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine,” this year’s event will be held primarily at the Château de Simiane, which will be open free of charge on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Understanding, Preserving, and Passing On Throughout the weekend, several exhibitions will explore heritage preservation from various perspectives. The Municipal Archives Department will present “Restore to Preserve,” featuring an exceptional selection of antique books and remarkable documents before and after restoration, complemented by a presentation of the techniques and trades involved in heritage restoration. On the second floor of the Château, the exhibition “Vanished Monuments of Valréas: Memory of an Erased Heritage” will bring to life, through photographs, old postcards, maps, and archival documents, several iconic buildings that have since disappeared from the Valréas landscape. The exhibition “Monuments in Danger: Understanding, Preserving, Passing On” will address current challenges in safeguarding built heritage: deteriorating monuments, restoration, the rehabilitation of the historic center, and the promotion of heritage. In the Scharf Room, visitors will also be able to explore the work conducted by two students from the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon on the Cloître des Cordeliers, through architectural surveys, historical hypotheses, and rehabilitation scenarios. The Micro-Folie at the Château de Simiane will also participate in this year’s event with an “Artistic Chill,” offering the chance to explore, through its digital collections, monuments that are threatened, lost, rebuilt, or saved thanks to major restoration campaigns. Discussing the Heritage of Tomorrow Heritage Days will kick off on Friday, September 18, at 6:00 p.m., in the town hall meeting room, with the event “Let’s Talk Heritage—Why an SPR in Valréas?” Open to everyone, this session will present the Remarkable Heritage Site (SPR) project, its boundaries, the heritage elements involved, and its impact on the local area and residents’ projects. An exhibition dedicated to the SPR will remain open throughout the weekend. SOLIHA will also be on hand Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to inform the public about support programs, particularly regarding energy-efficient renovations, housing adaptations, and facade renovations. Heritage to Discover with the Whole Family On Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m., families can participate in an origami workshop dedicated to the Château de Coudenberg, open to children ages 7 and up. Free puzzles inspired by old maps will also allow visitors to reconstruct several iconic monuments in Valréas and discover how they have evolved over time. Finally, Les Amis du Château will offer two free guided tours of the Château de Simiane on Saturday, September 19, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
