Sablet and its surroundings — The pure charm of Provence
Nestled in the heart of the Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards, Sablet is an authentic Provençal gem where time seems to have stood still. Its stone-faced houses, clustered in a circle around the Church of Saint-Nazaire, give it the appearance of a snail shell—a typically Provençal architecture steeped in history and poetry.
A Living Heritage
Never subject to feudal rule, Sablet was directly under the authority of the Papacy, which explains the absence of a castle. However, as early as the 14th century, the village protected itself behind a fortified wall, the remains of which tell the story of centuries of resistance. Stroll through its cobblestone alleys in search of the “soustets”—those passageways beneath the houses, with stones weathered by time—and admire the architectural details of each facade.
A Literary Soul
The “Place Yvan Audouard,” shaded and adorned with a fountain and a washhouse, pays tribute to this journalist and writer, a fervent lover of Sablet. Every July, the village comes alive during the Journées du Livre, welcoming dozens of authors: lectures, exhibitions, and outdoor book-signings invite visitors to explore and engage in conversation.
And for lovers of unusual stories: the writer Jean Raspail established the imaginary Consulate of Patagonia here, proclaiming himself “consul” of this fantastical kingdom—a bit of whimsy that adds a touch of humor to local history.
Inspiring Nature
To the south, the Dentelles de Montmirail rise like a natural sculpture, a favorite spot for hikers and climbers. Nearby, the villages of Gigondas and Séguret offer majestic panoramic views and numerous wineries where you can taste the wines of the “Côtes-du-Rhône.” Just a few kilometers away, the ancient town of Vaison-la-Romaine reveals its magnificent ruins, while the legendary Mont Ventoux—the giant of Provence and an iconic challenge for cyclists—awaits you with its breathtaking views.
Whether you’re a history buff, a wine lover, a contemplative hiker, a cyclist, or a fan of the Provençal light, the Sablet region offers a rare diversity of landscapes and experiences. Juicy fruits, full-bodied wines, picturesque villages, and a gentle atmosphere…
Everything comes together at the “Les Valérianes” cottage for an unforgettable stay in Provence.
