Terroir composition

The famous vineyards of Rasteau occupy a privileged position in the Rhône Valley. The terroir, a veritable mosaic, is made up of several types of clay (blue marine marl, red lacustrine marl, sandy marl and safre). The blue clay, specific to Rasteau, gives the wines a highly distinctive aromatic bouquet. The diversity of the wines is partly explained by the variety of soils and their three levels.

  • At an altitude of 320m, the highest slopes face south and are essentially composed of red and gray clayey lacustrine marl with pebbles on the surface. Freshness and harmony are the hallmarks of our cuvées.
  • Between 160 and 290m altitude, the main location of the vineyard, vines predominate on steep, mainly south-facing plots. Roots grow in skeletal soil on sandy marl. Wines from this area are elegant, fine and spicy.
  • Between 120 and 160m altitude, the stony soils produce robust wines with typical Rasteau aromas of fresh fruit and mild spices.

Grenache  King of the appellation

TheAOC Rasteau red refers to the rules of proportion to the vineyard, unlike the AOC Vin Doux Naturel, which refers to the rules of proportion to the plot.

Red wines are mainly made from Grenache Noir (50% or more), complemented by Syrah and/or Mourvèdre. They may be complemented by ‘accessory’ grape varieties such as carignan or cinsault, and sometimes even white grape varieties (with a proportion of 5% or less).

Grenache is the king grape variety for vins doux naturels: black, gray or white, Grenache is predominantly found in these wines, which are of great renown for the appellation. Rasteau’s VDNs are generally produced in very limited numbers… Let yourself be surprised by the pairings these exceptional wines can offer you!

And since pleasure never comes alone, discover recipes to match our still reds!
