The ” Chemin des Chapelles en Pays Ventoux ” association, the Communauté de Communes Vaison Ventoux and its communes, invite you to walk slowly, following the rhythm of the landscape, in the footsteps of the pilgrims of yesteryear, to discover the many chapels in this area.

Seven itineraries linking the main chapels of Vaison Ventoux with a different theme: that’s the promise of the “Chemin des Chapelles en Pays Ventoux”. This year, three new itineraries combine hiking, nature, culture and heritage!

Course 1 The Brotherhood Chapels

Departing from the beautiful Provencal village of Villedieu sur la colline, this loop plunges into a valley of vineyards and olive groves, then rises to a point overlooking Vaison-la-Romaine.

Panoramic views punctuate the walk, while the heritage of the unveiled chapels, which enrich the itinerary, evokes great moments of solidarity with the brotherhoods.

Course 2 Meeting the Knights Templar Hospitallers

Leaving from Rasteau or Buisson, it’s a real tour d’horizon, with panoramic views along the way, first of the Drôme mountains, then of the Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail, through pine and holm oak forests, famous vineyards and little-known chapels and commanderies… this is the land of the Templars… and Hospitallers, so aptly named.

Course 3 The chapels of gratitude

This route pays homage to our ancestors, who faced long and painful pandemics, particularly the plague. They built these chapels to come together to pray, regain strength and give thanks for the spiritual help they had received, hence the name “votive” or “gratitude” chapels.

Here you can hike between Cairanne, Rasteau and the hills overlooking the Aygues Valley and the village of Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde.

Course 4 Chapels in hilltop villages

From Séguret to Crestet or from Crestet to Séguret, you’ll pass through fortified villages perched on high ground, but also through a deep ravine that leads to the ancient abbey of Prebayon, before emerging into the light and vineyards, facing Mont Ventoux!

You’ll discover why chapels were built in these villages.

Course 5 The chapels of the happy hills

Explore these “happy hills”, as Giono liked to call them in Provence: the one at Faucon, with the path winding around this perched village; the one in the beautiful Jau forest, with its orchard openings; and the undulating hills between Saint-Romain-en-Viennois and Puyméras along the Lauzon river.

This route will take you to the chapels of Saint-Colombe and Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs in Faucon, along the paths of the Jau forest or through the center of the old village. If you choose the Grande Boucle, you can also visit the chapels of Puyméras (Saint-Apollinaire and Saint-Georges) and the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation in Saint-Romain-en-Viennois.
