Crestet

Welcome to Crestet, a hilltop village dominated by the towering ruins of one of the region’s oldest castles. Crestet sits on a rocky head from which it takes its name, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and mountains.

A Roman and medieval village

To explore this authentic village, start by parking in the visitors’ parking lot at the bottom of the village and walk into the medieval village, taking in the charm of its pretty, steep lanes.

On your way, you’ll pass the pretty covered wash-house, fed by the overflow from the fountain above. Continue on to the partly troglodyte Saint-Sauveur church, which opens onto a picturesque square featuring a 16th-century fountain with an octagonal basin.

Continue your ascent towards the château, admiring the facades with their Renaissance-style windows lining the narrow streets. On the esplanade, the privately-owned medieval château stands majestically, restored by renowned French architect Roger Anger.

Don’t leave Crestet without taking in the breathtaking panorama of the Dentelles de Montmirail and the mythical Mont Ventoux from this highest point in the village.

If you’re feeling sporty, take one of the hiking trails through the mountain and discover the sublime surrounding scenery.

Coup de coeur

Have fun looking for sculptures by the artist Durieux in the village streets: grimacing heads, a statue of Bacchus, a bishop and other whimsical testimonials left by this contemporary artist who exhibited at the 1937 Universal Exhibition and lived in Crestet.
