Aulan Castle

Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Toulourenc valley, the Aulan castle whose first traces date back to the twelfth century belonged among others to the Mevouillon barons.
In 1635, Isabeau de L'Espine heiress of the fief of Aulan married François-Marie Suarez and bringed the castle in dowry. Manhandled to the Revolution, the castle has been completely redesigned in a Viollet-Le-Duc style in the second half of the nineteenth century by Marquis Arthur Suarez d'Aulan. This man fell in love for this land and decided to build a house like the height of his passion. Aulan Mayor, general Drôme counsel, MP for the Drôme and equerry of Napoleon III, he was particularly interested in agricultural issues. He introduced Austrian pine to reforest the area. This same love for this place brought his little son the Count Charles Suarez of Aulan to resume his house. Since 1958, the castle of Aulan is the only private Baronnies residence opened to visitors. Today it is still owned by their descendants, the Suarez of Aulan and a place for family gathering.
